Places to eat and shop
You can do all your daily shopping at Riom-es-Montagnes, at 7 kilometers from your cottage. A typical french village with amongst others two supermarkets, five boulangeries (try them all and compare their "croissants"!), fromagerie, pharmacy, tourist office, a hotel, restaurants, cafes. Once every fortnight there is a farmers market on Wednesdays. You will find restaurants in the area which serve excellent quality food at affordable prizes. You may also try the "fermes auberges" (menu of the day at different farms).
Outdoor activities
Fishing, hiking, riding, mountain biking, climbing, paragliding, adventure trails, orienteering courses, nordic walking, sports facilities (tennis) or you might want to walk with a donkey!
In summer there are also plenty of smallscale events like flea markets, various music festivals, traditional crafts and cable carts at Le Mont-Dore and Super-Besse. Take a special train through the mountains and watch the locals compete in jeux de boules. The well known "Route des Fromages" brings you famous regional cheeses like the Bleu d' Auvergne and the pastures of the Salers cow.
Winter
In winter put on your snowshoes and follow the special trails. The Massif Cantalien has excellent skiing possibilities with facilities for alpine- and crosscountry skiing. Chateau de Tautal Bas is ideally placed, being a convenient 40 minutes drive away from well known areas like Le Mont-Dore, Super-Besse and Super-Lioran.
